Operating Instructions for Marine Boilers
Please note that all the threads will be soft, following the silver soldering process used during the boiler’s manufacture. As such, they are extremely easily damaged and great care should be taken not to cross thread or over tighten any fittings.
Gas Supply
A suitable gas tank should be connected to the burner jet assembly using 1/8” OD copper pipe. The tank and burner nipples should ideally be silver soldered onto each end of the pipe, although soft solder may be used as an alternative.
Fill the gas tank using either pure butane or a butane/propane mixture.
IMPORTANT - MIXTURES CONTAINING MORE THAN 40% PROPANE MUST NOT BE USED MACCSTEAM BOILERS OR GAS TANKS.
Filling
Fill the boiler by removing the safety valve and pouring in water until the gauge glass is approximately three quarters full.
Replace the safety valve, taking great care not to damage the threads.
Lighting
It is not necessary to remove the burner from the boiler to light it.
Turn on the gas supply, hold a lighted match or cigarette lighter near to the top of the chimney and the flame should pop back onto the burner. When lit correctly, a blueish flame should be visible through the narrow slots in the burner and a faint roar will be audible. It may be necessary to restrict the air supply to the burner to ease lighting. If the flame pops down the chimney but fails to light the burner, slide the restrictor sleeve on the gas/air mixer tube to partially cover the air holes and try lighting the boiler again. Once the burner is lit, slide the restrctor sleeve clear of the air holes and adjust the gas supply to give a satisfactory flame.
Steam will be raised in approximately 8 to 10 minutes. As the temperature increases, the water in the boiler will expand and the level will rise in the water gauge. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge, if fitted, and ensure that the safety valve opens at 60psi. Whilst the boiler is in steam, try to keep the gauge glass between ½ and ¾ full of water, using either a hand pump or a mechanical pump driven off the engine. If no pumps are fitted, make sure that you turn off the gas supply before the water reaches the bottom of the glass. YOUR BOILER MAY BE SERIOUSLY DAMAGED IF THE WATER LEVEL IS ALLOWED TO DROP OUT OF SIGHT IN THE BOTTOM FITTING OF THE WATER GAUGE WHILE THE BURNER IS LIT.
Never attempt to remove any boiler fittings or plugs whilst the boiler is under pressure.
Never attempt to fill the gas tank whist the burner is lit.
The certificates supplied with my boilers and gas tanks show that they have successfully passed a hydraulic test on the date shown and to the pressure shown on the certificate. They are not certificates of insurance.
Model boilers are not toys. The boiler/burner assembly will become extremely hot during use. They should only be operated by children under proper adult supervision.
Maccsteam marine boilers are intended for use in model boats, they should not be used indoors. Please ensure there is adequate ventilation at all times.
If you are not completely clear about any aspect of operating this device please ask.
